Your kids will not live with you forever! Inevitably they will venture out on their own, using all of their acquired skills to spread their wings and fly. They will learn to become independent all on their own, but you can still teach them a thing or two while you have their attention.

We have a quote on the wall here at our house that says “Give them roots, and give them wings.” Some of our kids have their wings, and some are still growing roots!

These important life lessons help smooth the transition from teenager to independent adult.

Have Healthy and Safe Online Habits!

Both us and our kids have to deal with more distractions than ever. Technological advances allow us to have a digital world at our fingertips night and day. It’s much too easy to get sucked into an online world of social media, games, and other time-draining activities. We must practice self-discipline daily by setting limits on the amount of time we spend online. Keep smart phones and tablets out of the bedroom and instead of connecting with people online, spend time forming and maintaining relationships with real people.

Never Stop Learning!

Read fabulous books, keep up with current events, take classes, try new things. The world is an amazing place and every day is an opportunity for learning.

Have a growing relationship with Jesus!

We must teach our kids that they will experience ups and downs in their adult life. Struggles are part of the deal, and not every day will be easy. Whether life is going your way, or you’re facing a hardship, a strong relationship with Jesus is key. There’s no such thing as neutral – you’re either growing closer or slipping further away.

Talk to strangers!

Everyone has a story to tell, and learning to listen is part of the process. Remember it’s not about you. Talking and listening to others will help you be empathetic while making the world a better place.

Know how to take care of yourself when you’re sick!

You will get sick; your family will get sick, and medical emergencies are not uncommon. Prepare yourself with knowledge of CPR, first aid, and how to treat common illnesses.

Be smart about money!

Responsible money management includes learning how to properly budget, invest, and save. You must also learn to spend your money wisely, stay out of debt, and give generously to your church and organizations you believe in.

Be a person of character!

Learn to serve Jesus and your community. By giving yourself selflessly to others, you will be filled with joy! You are blessed to be a child of God. Show your gratitude for this beautiful life you are living by giving back.

The best way to teach these lessons to your teens is to practice them yourself!

Raising happy, healthy, and independent kids is not always easy, but modeling the behaviors you want to see will help make you a happy, healthy parent.
