Your Questions Answered

Are costs of CLEP & DSST exams included?

No. All exams are purchased separately through College Board (CLEP) and Prometric (DSST). The current cost of a CLEP exam is $89 and the cost of a DSST exam is $85. Both exams also incur a modest testing center fee, set by your local testing institution.

How many credits can my student earn?

Every college sets their own credit value of these exams, and at Charter Oak State College, Excelsior College, and Thomas Edison State University, they total 51 college credits. You, as the parent, award the high school credit for your student’s studies of these subjects.

How do students earn the remaining credits needed for their degree?

Dual Credit at Home helps students complete their general education requirements; however, many of our students continue working on additional credits. Our program gives them a solid foundation for studying for credit by exam, so they either continue taking exams on their own or use our complimentary degree plans for the full bachelor or associate degrees. The College Degree Roadmap course explains the whole degree process in detail.

Can adults use this method to complete their college degrees?

YES! We have parents AND teens studying for exams together. The same methods detailed in The College Degree Roadmap apply to adult learners, plus they can use the Dual Credit at Home Study Plans.

Do students do other school work besides the Study Plans?

Many parents supplement their teen’s dual credit studies with a foreign language, music, sports, drama, band, speech & debate, etc. Often a student is also still studying some early level math or English material. Students are not ready to take the College Mathematics CLEP until they finish Algebra II.

What other expenses are part of the Study Plans?

We recommend the use of SpeedyPrep and InstantCert, two online flashcard programs. Both are not required, but we have seen our students have great success with them. Also, we estimate that you can purchase the textbooks in our provided book list for approximately $300 in used condition.
