Advanced math is one of those tricky subjects that can be very hard to teach if you’re not a mathematician (or really into math). Fortunately, you don’t have to be an expert to help your high school student prepare for college-level math. The secret is to start early teaching critical thinking and study skills. The advanced math concepts can be easily outsourced when the time comes. Here are some ways to help your homeschool student prepare for college-level math.
Take Advantage of Online Learning
There is a wealth of information on the internet to help you and your teen learn complex math concepts. Khan Academy is a favorite with math educators, providing quality videos on everything from basic skills to advanced calculus. They also offer SAT practice tests if your teen wants to see where they stand with their advanced math skills. IXL Math is another website that hones in on problem areas and helps build confidence with complex concepts. IXL is also available as a mobile app, so your teen can continue to learn and track their progress even when they’re away from home.
Hire a Math Tutor
Hiring a quality tutor is always an option – they will get one-on-one, personalized instruction and will be able to work at their own pace. Math tutors will be able to spend more time on tricky concepts, while breezing through areas that your student has already mastered. It is important to find a math tutor who is patient, articulate, and most importantly — passionate about teaching math. A tutor who can share their love of numbers and mathematical concepts with your child is a blessing indeed!
Earn High School and College Credits with a CLEP Exam in Mathematics
Encourage your student to study for the College Mathematics CLEP exam. This exam covers basic algebra, geometry, data analysis and statistics, financial math, and logic, and the college credits earned with a passing score are equivalent to a general education college math class. This is a great way to earn dual credit and prepare students for higher level math courses. Dual Credit at Home includes Study Plans to help your student prepare for this CLEP exam, along with 12 other CLEP and DSST exams.
Preparing your high school student for college-level math doesn’t have to be a burden. It is an important part of equipping your student for college and beyond, so take advantage of all the resources available to help you and your homeschooler succeed.
